Everyone who owns an HVAC unit is aware that proper maintenance is important. A HVAC system that does no function properly can end up costing the homeowner a lot of money. The following tips concerning HVAC and learn what to do if you eventually need to replace it.
Know what type of system you currently have before looking for a repair person. This will let you know that you're able to give the contractor the information they might need.
If you struggle with your HVAC, take a look around the house prior to calling a contractor. This information will help the contractor determine what the problem is and how to fix it.
Know what you want done before you select an HVAC contractor. It will be hard for a contractor to provide you with an estimate on the phone if they have not seen your current system. It will be more hard if you over the phone without the information readily available.
Clean the debris regularly. You never know when things can pile up, especially after a windy or rainy storm, and that can ruin your system. It can cause a disaster with your unit.
Turn it off so you don't get hurt or break something. Then, take the grill off, pull the blades out, and begin cleaning the unit and them gently.
Lubricate the oil ports on your fan condenser at least once each year. You can find these ports covered with rubber or metal cap covering them. Use a lightweight, detergent-free SAE 20 oil, but make sure to avoid overfilling them.
Put your outdoor condensers in places with shade.
Have the HVAC serviced at least yearly. This should be checked often for debris and again in the spring.
Don't allow your home temperature get dangerously high. Air conditioners can only really cool your home down 20 degrees Fahrenheit in a reasonable time limit. If the temperature in your home rises to 100 degrees F or higher, you would only be able to cool it down just above 80 degrees. This is not a healthy environment to live in.
Now that you have read this, you should be better prepared to keep your system running properly.
